Ethiopia Historic and Coffee Route

Day 1: Addis Ababa 

Upon your arrival at Bole International Airport, you will clear immigration and proceed to baggage claim, after collecting your checked luggage’s, clear customs and pass through the arrivals hall where you will be met by our representative, who will assist you with your transfer to your hotel. Overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel/ similar.

Day 2: : Drive Addis Ababa – Jimma (350 km / 6 – 7 hrs)

After breakfast, drive to the southwestern highlands and the town of Jimma in the Kaffa region. The southwestern region is quite distinct from other regions in Ethiopia. Here you’ll see a mixture of broad grasslands, terraced hillsides and broad rivers and forests. The area is famous for coffee and Kaffa (the province) is said to be where the original wild plants were found. Jimma is the commercial center for the coffee produced in this region. Overnight Hotel at Jimma.

Day 3: Drive Jimma – Bebeka (240 km, 5 – 6 hrs)

This day you will drive out to Mizan Tefari and the Bebeke Coffee Plantation (30k from Mizan Tefari). Bebeka Coffee Plantation covers some 6,000 hectares and is the largest and oldest Coffee Plantation in Ethiopia. There will be a tour of the plantation which will include the organic coffee plantation and the experimental spice and fruit plantations. Beehives have been established and the honey is highly recommended. Overnight in the Bebeka Guesthouse – a comfortable lodge set in the plantation and home to a wide variety of birdlife.

Day 4: Drive Bebeka – Gerra – Jimma

This morning head for Gerra, the forest coffee area that is still owned by the family of the former king of the Kaffa region is called Abba Jiffar. You will be escorted around the estate including the Abajifar Museum and Palace. Return to Jimma for overnight.

Day 5: Drive Jimma – Addis

This day you will drive back to Addis. Overnight at Radisson Blu Hotel/ similar.

Day 6: Fly Addis – Bahir Dar (1hr)

This morning you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Bahir Dar. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Later, you will take a boat cruise on Lake Tana to visit the 14th century Monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret which is the most famous of the Zege peninsula monasteries. It has a very beautiful painted maqdas and priceless collection of crosses as well as crowns. In the afternoon you will drive to the village of Tis Isat to see the Blue Nile falls (please be informed that due to the newly constructed electric dam in the vicinity the water level of the falls could be very minimal. Day 7: Drive Bahir Dar – Awara Amba – Gondar  (196km / 4 hrs.)

Drive to Gondar, en route you will drive to the village of Awra Amba, which is located off the Woreta – Woldia ‘China-Road’. Visit this unique settlement that is considered to be a prime model for self-help and above all gender equality. Women have equal rights as men and there is no distinction in divisions of labor. Men cook, women plow, and religion has no place. They believe in hard work and being good to people. Visit and drive to Gondar a town founded in 1636 by the great Emperor Fassiladas. Set in a landscape of incomparable beauty, it was the Royal Capital of Ethiopia. Visit the Castles and Churches built by Emperor Fassiladas and his descendants.  Later proceed to the fascinating Debre Birhan Selassie Church its walls and ceilings decorated with scenes of Biblical lore and medieval. Day 8: Excursion Simien Mountains (250km / 6 ½ hrs)

Today you will drive to Sanqaber in the Siemen Mountains, the most wild and spectacular of all Ethiopian landscapes. Known as ‘the roof of Africa,’ your visit will let you soak in the magnificent scenery and relax with a picnic lunch with a beautiful view. Drive back to Gondar in the afternoon. Day 9: Fly Gondar – Axum

Be transferred to the airport for flight to Axum, Ethiopia’s most ancient city. Axum was once the center of a great empire and the seat of learning for the ancient Ge’ez language and literature.

Enjoy a city tour of Axum that includes the stelae park, St. Mary’s Church, the sanctuary chapel which is the repository of the Ark of the Covenant, the coronation yard and Axum museum, Queen of Sheba’s palace ruins and King Kaleb’s tomb. Overnight at Yared Zema Hotel / Consular Hotel

Day 10: Fly Axum -Lalibela

The following morning you will catch your flight to Lalibela. Once you have arrived you will check-in to your hotel.

This day you will have full day visit of Lalibela churches. The 1st group of churches: “Bete Medhanialem”, “Bete Mariam”, “Bete Meskel”, “Bete Denagil” and “Bete Golgota”. After finishing the 1st group you will then visit the church from the 3rd group “Bete Giorgis”, a church referred to as the eighth wonder of the world, hewn out of solid rock and believed to have been built in the 12th century. If time allows you will visit the second group. Overnight at the Mezena Lodge  / Lalibela lodge

Day 11: Fly back to Addis & departure

Today you will fly back to Addis and later you will be transferred to the Bole international airport for your departure.
